Flykite Productions, organisers of GOtv Boxing Night, have announced that the new Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) African light-heavyweight champion, Rasheed “ID Buster” Idowu, will be hosted at the 31st edition of the show.
The premier boxing event slated for the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, on May 1, will feature seven intriguing fights, including a West African Boxing Union (WABU) light welterweight title clash between the cracking pair of Segun “War” Adeyemi and Adeyemi “Spirit” Adekanla.
In a statement on Sunday, the company said “ID Buster” will be hosted to encourage aspiring boxers.
“We were delighted that what was wrongly denied him in Ghana was restored to him by UBO. We are bringing ID Buster to GOtv Boxing Night on May 1 to celebrate him and Nigerian boxing,” the statement said.
“ID Buster” knocked out his Ghanaian opponent, Bastie Samie, in the second round of the title fight in Accra on April 13. But in one of the most controversial circumstances in recent boxing history, the match commissioner, a member of the Ghana Boxing Authority, declared the match a technical draw.
On Monday, April 14, the Universal Boxing Organization, reversed the decision, stating that “ID Buster” had won the fight cleanly and should be crowned the new champion. The belt was later sent to Nigeria and received in Lagos by the President of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), Dr. Rafiu Ladipo.
Also scheduled for the night is the national welterweight challenge fight between Raheem “Baddo” Animashaun and Samuel “Apata Roro” Moses. In the super welterweight category, Afikun Gbenga will square up against Adewale; Sikiru “Isho” Ogunyaju, will take on the current national flyweight champion, Sifon “Best” Iwatt, in a national flyweight challenge fight; the national catchweight category will see Sikiru “Omo Iya Eleja” Shogbesan battle Batholomew Abuchi; Emmanuel “Ability” Abimbola will slug it out with Azeez Ayobami in the national lightweight category, while Hammed ‘Ese’ Ganiyu will confront Yusuf “hungry Lion” Ogunbumi in the light welterweight category.
GOtv Boxing Night is supported by DStv, SuperSport, Ragital.ng, Newsbreak.ng, and will broadcast live in 50 African countries.
