Ijoko: A forgotten community in Ogun State

YUSUF MUHAMMED

Ijoko is a community in Ogun State, Southwest, Nigeria that has been forgotten over the years by successive governments in the State. In no time, the community will be cut off from the rest of the state as the only road that links the community to Sango Ota is currently being ravaged by erosion.

At times, several vehicles will break down in the middle of the flooded road, forcing commuters to remove their shoes, roll up their trousers and walk through the flood to safety.

Ironically, this community plays host to the popular Dangote salt company and a host of other production and manufacturing companies.

Our reporters who went round the area described the situation as pathetic, as the journey from Sango Ota which ordinarily would have taken 15 minutes now takes up to one hour, thirty minutes, while transport fares rose from one hundred naira to five hundred naira.

Our reporter also spoke with a cross section of the motorist on their plight.

Mr. Jimoh Kehinde, a commercial bus driver said that they accepted their fate since no Governor is ready to help the community even though there are many companies in the community that are paying tax to the government.

“We have to accepted our fate because the reality on ground is that no Governor, right from Otunba Gbenga Daniel to the present Prince Dapo Abiodun knows that Ijoko exists in Ogun State, yet they do come to campaign during election.”

Another motorist, Mr. Adisa Lekan said he usually park his car at Sango Ota whenever he is coming home from work, to board public bus. According to him, he has spent over N50,000 to repair the car in the past two weeks.
