African China Hints At Joining Nigerian Politics

Nigerian singer, Chinagorom Onuoha, popularly known as African China, has said he may consider joining politics after years of avoiding it.

The artiste disclosed this in an interview with Pulse Nigeria, noting that his desire to see a better Nigeria has made him rethink his stance.

African China explained that he previously preferred activism but became worried that activists were not making enough impact.

“I might. In the past, I was always running away from politics. I just wanted to be an activist, but people are not taking us where we want to. However, I do not want to learn from people I don’t want to end up like,” he pointed out.

The ‘Mr President’ crooner also spoke on Nigeria’s challenges and the role of young people in shaping the country’s future.

He argued that youths may not bring meaningful change if handed power without a system that discourages corruption.

“Even when some people advocate giving the youth an opportunity, who do you want to give an opportunity to? Somebody you have taught nothing? All they have been taught is corruption,” he said.

“So, if they hand over power to the youth today, there will not be much difference if they don’t fix the law, because it is only the law that will guide everybody and keep everyone on track. The law is not properly structured,” he added.

The singer therefore expressed concern over the increasing rate of substance abuse among Nigerian youths.

“I can categorically tell you that 80% of youths are involved in substance abuse. So many young people I have come across today are either smoking one thing or another. It’s like if you’re not, you don’t belong,” he said.
