I Cried, Locked Myself In My Room – Funke Akindele Opens Up on Personal Struggles
Filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele has spoken about her personal struggles, revealing that she has had moments when she broke down in tears before pulling herself together again.
This was disclosed in a recent interview with CNN Africa, where she discussed how she handles personal challenges despite her public image.
“I cried, I locked myself in the room, cry, breakdown, hit the bed, but I just pick myself and come back to life,” she said.
She noted that the public only gets to see bits and pieces of her life, including reports about her relationships and marriages.
“Oh yes, lots of times. It is online they see the breakups and the marriages. Sometimes I tell myself, ‘We’ve made a mistake again,’” she said.
“People are going to judge you. And I’m like, do you care about that? Why don’t I just brace up, face it, face the challenges, move on in life, make yourself happy, do what is right?”
Akindele said prioritizing her mental health has helped her pull through difficult times over the years.
“You have to consider your mental health first, and that’s what I’ve done over the years, and it has helped me,” she said.
The actress also revealed that she is now making more deliberate efforts to take care of herself after years of focusing solely on work.
“I’m kind of trying to catch my groove back. I am trying to get back. Now I’m more intentional about myself, making my hair, looking good,” she said.
“I was all about work, I’m still about work, but it’s so hard. I could just come out with my cornrows and a face cap and slippers, sneakers, and just get to work with things on my table. But now you can see me dressed so well to the office.”
She added that she has come to realize that life should not be all about work, emphasizing the need for self-love and spending time with loved ones.
“I’ve noticed over the years that it’s not all about the work. You need to take care of yourself, you need to love yourself, you need to have time for your family, your loved ones, because work will go, the family will be there,” she said.
Akindele was previously married to Kehinde Almaroof Oloyede, a marriage that ended in 2013, less than a year after their wedding.
In 2016, she married Nigerian music producer and filmmaker JJC Skillz, and they welcomed twin boys in December 2018 before parting ways in 2022 over “irreconcilable differences.”
