Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West at the Senate, has promised to appeal a ruling of the Tribunal which nullified his election on Friday, 23 August, 2019.
In a Twitter post, Melaye wrote: “No cause for alarm at all. Even if it went my way they will still go to the Appeal Court. Our mandate cannot be taken. We will get judgment at the Appeal Court.”
He added that “There will be fresh election in Kogi West because I will be Governor. For my Senate mandate no shaking.’’
The Kogi State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Friday nullified the election of Mr Melaye.
Delivering Judgment, the three-member panel led by Justice A. O. Chijioke unanimously held that the election was shrouded in controversy and marred by widespread malpractices.
Meanwhile, there have been several attempts by gladiators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to bring down Melaye. Before the April general elections, he was attacked and intimidated by the police before he eventually won the election, beating the candidate of the ruling party, Smart Adeyemi and others.
After getting rid of Bukola Saraki, Ayodele Fayose and Atiku Abubakar among other vocal members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Melaye seems to be the next target of the APC.
An APC source told Newscarte under condition of anonymity that “he (Melaye) is not likely to get out of this. We need to cut his wings, probably before the Kogi State governorship election and ahead of 2023.”
