Magixx: Nigerian Artistes Need International Hit to Make Real Money in Music

Afrobeats singer, Magixx, has said it is unlikely for a Nigerian artiste to make a fortune in music without having a hit song with international appeal.

Speaking on an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the singer explained that to remain financially stable, artistes must consistently release hit songs after their first breakthrough.

He disclosed that it took him two to three months to start earning from music even after he was signed to Mavin Records by Don Jazzy.

Magixx stated that performance fees are also determined by the number of hit songs an artiste has.

“Even when you get signed to a big record label as an artist, you first have to drop a song with international appeal before you start making serious money. It took 2–3 months after Don Jazzy signed me before I started earning from music,” he said.

He added that before the money started coming in, he struggled with bills and family responsibilities, noting that people assumed he had no financial problems because he was signed to a big label.

“It was difficult because I had to maintain the lifestyle of a superstar with expensive designer clothes. But eventually, the money started coming. One hit song can earn you N500,000–N700,000 per show, while another hit can take your fee to N1.5 million,” Magixx stated.
