Criticism Is Part of Nation Building, Not Hatred for Tinubu — Ope Banwo
Founder of the Naija Lives Matter movement, Dr. Ope Banwo, has said that constructive criticism of government is an important part of nation building, stressing that his comments on the administration of President Bola Tinubu should not be misconstrued as personal hatred.
Banwo said his interventions on national issues are driven by his desire to see Nigeria become a better-governed nation where leaders remain accountable to the people.
According to him, criticism is not intended to undermine the President but to encourage improved governance and better outcomes for Nigerians.
”Don’t assume I hate Tinubu because I criticize his government. I am a social critic. It’s my job to criticize him to do better,”Banwo said.
He added: “It’s Tinubu’s job to govern well. Let everyone abide in their calling.”
The lawyer and public affairs commentator maintained that democracy flourishes when citizens are free to speak truth to power, noting that constructive criticism should be welcomed as a valuable contribution to governance rather than dismissed as political opposition.
Banwo said nation building requires citizens who are willing to identify shortcomings in government policies while also proposing solutions that advance the public good.
He explained that as a social critic, he sees it as his responsibility to highlight areas where government can improve, insisting that honest feedback helps leaders make better decisions and strengthens democratic institutions.
The Naija Lives Matter founder has, over the years, consistently advocated for policies and reforms aimed at improving governance, promoting transparency and accountability, and enhancing the welfare of Nigerians. Through his platform, he has repeatedly called on leaders at all levels to place the interests of citizens above partisan politics and personal considerations.
In recent months, Banwo has spoken on several national issues, including economic reforms, judicial accountability, anti-corruption efforts and institutional development.
His commentaries have consistently centred on the need for responsible leadership and practical policies capable of addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
Reaffirming his commitment to a better Nigeria, Banwo said criticism offered in good faith is an act of patriotism and should be seen as part of the collective effort to build a stronger nation.
