I Am In Debt After Spending Over ₦300m On Cinema Film Without Profit – Jide Kosoko

Veteran Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko, has lamented financial losses incurred after taking his movie, Leko Esu Gbayi, to the cinema.

Speaking during an interview, the actor revealed that producing and releasing the film gulped more than ₦300 million, noting that the money was provided by investors who expected returns on the project.

When the interviewer expressed shock at the huge sum, Kosoko clarified that the investors did not just give him money but entered into a business arrangement with him.

“They did business, and we took the film to the cinema. Different things happened,” he said.

Asked what went wrong, the veteran actor disclosed that the movie failed to generate enough revenue to recoup their investment, adding that the little that was made was shared among stakeholders.

“We didn’t earn our money, and the little we earned was split,” he lamented.

Kosoko humorously described his financial situation, singing about being in debt despite still dancing.

“As I am, if you hear someone with debt dancing, it’s me,” he sang, before clarifying that it was not exactly about being indebted to anyone.

According to him, everyone who worked on the production had been paid, but the project did not yield the financial breakthrough they anticipated.

He added that the experience has continued to weigh heavily on him.

When pressed on what happened to the cinema earnings and who handled the distribution, Kosoko acknowledged the huge investments made by cinema owners.

“I won’t deceive anyone, but truly, those who own the cinemas have huge investments,” he said.
