Unseen Photos Released 25 Years After Peter Falconio Murder in Hope of Finding Remains
On the 25th anniversary of the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio, Australian police have released previously unseen investigation photographs in a renewed effort to locate his remains.
Falconio was shot on July 14, 2001, along a remote stretch of the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek in the Northern Territory.
While his killer, Bradley Murdoch, was convicted of the crime, he died of throat cancer in prison last year at age 67 without ever revealing where he hid Falconio’s body.

The newly published images include a chilling, full-length photograph of Murdoch staring directly into a police camera during the investigation, alongside harrowing photos of Falconio’s girlfriend, Joanne Lees. Lees miraculously escaped the attacker by hiding in roadside scrubland for hours before flagging down a passing truck.
The police gallery captures a deeply traumatized Lees in the hours following the assault, as well as close-ups of injuries she sustained while her wrists were bound with cable ties.
Other photographs depict the crime scene and the couple’s distinctive orange Volkswagen Kombi van. The vehicle, which Falconio and Lees were using to travel across Australia, was found abandoned just off the highway close to where the attack took place.
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole emphasized that the 25-year milestone serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing pain endured by Lees and Falconio’s family.
Hoping the visual evidence will jog the public’s memory and generate fresh leads, Dole stated that the investigation “can never be considered closed until Peter’s remains are found and his family can lay him to rest.”
