Ycee Decries ‘Olodo Uprising’, Says Nigeria No Longer Celebrates Academic Excellence
Rapper Ycee has raised concerns over what he describes as a decline in the value placed on education and a growing tolerance for ignorance in the country.
Speaking in a recent interview on the Afropolitan podcast, the artist said Nigeria is shifting away from rewarding academic excellence, a trend he believes could harm younger generations.
The statement added that, “Nigerian society is no longer celebrating academic excellence. People don’t even want to go to school anymore. It’s not even Yahoo culture anymore; now we have a ‘Peller culture.”

He argued that interest in formal education is waning and pointed to cultural shifts beyond internet fraud as evidence.
Speaking further, Ycee described the current climate as an “Olodo uprising,” saying society is now normalising ignorance instead of promoting learning and critical thinking.
He added that ongoing challenges in the education sector have worsened the situation.
“This ‘Olodo’ uprising we are witnessing is terrible. It feels like we are trying so hard to accommodate ignorance so people won’t feel bad, and now they seem to be the majority. The massive attack on Nigeria’s educational system is alarming,” he said.
He also questioned the message sent to young people when fame and financial success are linked to controversial or unintelligent online content.
