Ayra Starr Shifts To Sound-Driven Music

Mavin Records star Ayra Starr, born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, has said her songwriting process has shifted from being driven by emotion to focus more on sound and experimentation.
Speaking on the Creatorium Podcast, the Afrobeat star explained that she no longer starts songs solely from emotional inspiration. Instead, she plays around with different sonic ideas until something clicks.
“It depends on what I am going for. Lately for me, creating just starts with trying. Not emotion; just trying, then we see where it takes us. It may start with chords or sounds, or a specific sound I want to sample. Sometimes, I just want to do something fun or make something that sounds different,” she stated.

Speaking further, she emphasized that her debut album leaned heavily on emotional themes, while her current work is more experimental and centered on exploring sounds.
“For my first album, it was more about making something sad or matching a certain emotion. But now it’s about experimenting sonically and following different ideas to see where they lead,” she stated.
She also reflected on how her hit Beggie Beggie came about in an unexpected place, saying that, “I literally wrote it on a bus going home. Someone was begging, and a woman said, ‘See this one, beggie beggie,’” she explained.
Ayra Starr therefore commented about the pressures that come with her growing career, noting that staying on top in the music industry requires discipline, consistency, and resilience off stage.
