Berlin Court Sentence Doctor Who Kills 15 Of His Patients To Prison
A Berlin court has handed a life sentence to a German palliative care physician convicted of murdering 15 of his patients.
The 41-year-old doctor, identified as Johannes M. due to Germany’s strict privacy laws, was found guilty of killing 12 women and 3 men over a nearly three-year period between September 2021 and July 2024.
However, officials fear the true scale of his crimes may be far greater, as prosecutors are actively examining dozens of additional suspicious deaths linked to his care.

The victims, ranging in age from 25 to 94, were all suffering from severe illnesses, but the court established that none of them were on the verge of death. According to the prosecution, the doctor injected lethal drug cocktails into his patients during home visits without their knowledge or approval. He also repeatedly attempted to arson the victims’ residences to destroy evidence.
In a single day in July 2024—just prior to his capture—he killed a 75-year-old man in central Berlin and a 76-year-old woman in a nearby area just hours later, though his attempt to burn down the woman’s home failed.
After remaining silent for the majority of his year-long trial, the physician broke his silence last month to admit to taking the lives of 12 severely ill patients. He claimed he mistakenly believed he was acting out of mercy to save them from suffering and infirmity, telling the court that he truly thought it was the best choice for everyone involved while offering an apology for the pain he had inflicted.
He faces significantly more legal scrutiny
ahead, as authorities are currently probing 76 other cases. Local media reports note that if these additional charges are proven, it would mark one of the most prolific serial murder cases in modern German history. Johannes M. has indicated that he plans to cooperate much sooner in these upcoming legal proceedings.
Throughout the trial, heartbroken relatives expressed their profound shock and grief. The mother of his youngest victim, a 25-year-old woman who died in 2021, wept as she testified that her daughter never expressed a wish to die.
Similarly, the son of a 72-year-old victim who passed away in 2024 noted that his mother was actively planning a vacation to the Baltic Sea with her sister, emphasizing that she wanted to keep on living.
Citing the exceptional gravity of his crimes, the court ordered that the doctor remain in preventive detention after serving his prison term. It also issued a permanent, lifetime ban preventing him from ever practicing medicine again.
