IGP Approves Fresh Probe Into Mohbad’s Death

Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a petition seeking a fresh investigation into the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
The petition was filed by the late singer’s family. Mohbad died under controversial circumstances on September 12, 2023.
The approval was disclosed in a statement by Oladayo Ogungbe, legal representative of the Aloba family, who said the re-investigation is ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to the statement, the family submitted the petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and it was officially received on May 7.
The family raised concerns over inconsistencies in the previous investigation and called for a comprehensive forensic process.
Ogungbe said the IGP has approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action.
He added that the petition has been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.
“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter,” the statement read.
“The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process.”
The Federal High Court in Abuja recently dismissed a suit filed by the Break the Silence Foundation seeking a re-investigation into Mohbad’s death.
Ogungbe further clarified that the NGO’s suit was separate from the family’s petition to the police.
“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” he said.
He stressed that the court’s dismissal did not terminate the police investigation initiated through the family’s petition.
The family said it will continue to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant information, documents, witnesses and other materials that could aid the probe.
It also appealed to the police to conduct the investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism.
Meanwhile, it was gathered that in May 2024, pathologists reported that the cause of Mohbad’s death could not be determined due to advanced decomposition of his body.
