Institute of Security Nigeria Endorses Book on Buratai’s Military Leadership, Hails Legacy of Security Reforms
The Institute of Security Nigeria (ISN) has endorsed a newly published book, Military Transformational Leadership in Action: The Buratai Era, describing it as a valuable scholarly work that captures the leadership reforms, institutional transformation and operational strategies implemented during the tenure of former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd.).
In an official statement signed by its Deputy President and Chief Executive, Barrister Adebayo Akinade, the Institute commended the author, Dr. Mohammed Abubakar, for documenting what it described as one of the most significant periods of transformation in the Nigerian Army between 2015 and 2021.
The Institute noted that the publication provides a comprehensive assessment of Buratai’s leadership philosophy and the reforms introduced to strengthen the Nigerian Army during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency and other emerging security threats.

According to the statement, the book highlights key reforms including the adaptation of military doctrine to confront asymmetric threats posed by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), institutional improvements in training, logistics, equipment and command structures, as well as initiatives aimed at boosting troop welfare, morale and civil-military relations.
The Institute stated that these reforms have positioned the Buratai era as an important case study in crisis leadership, institution-building and maintaining operational effectiveness under intense security pressure.
Beyond his military career, the Institute also acknowledged Buratai’s continued contributions to national development through diplomacy and public service.
It noted that his current role as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin reflects the same strategic leadership principles that defined his military career and reinforces the connection between security, diplomacy, national resilience and institution-building.
The statement further praised General Buratai’s mentorship and continued patronage of the Institute of Security Nigeria, saying his guidance has contributed significantly to the organisation’s research, policy advocacy and professional development programmes.
”The Institute deeply appreciates General Buratai’s patronage. His leadership, mentorship and strategic guidance have shaped the Institute’s research, training and policy advocacy on asymmetric and hybrid threats, plural policing and national resilience,” the statement read.
The Institute added that Buratai’s example continues to inspire security professionals, researchers and emerging leaders within and outside the security sector.
It also described Dr. Mohammed Abubakar’s publication as an important contribution to security scholarship and recommended it as a valuable resource for military officers, policymakers, researchers and students seeking a better understanding of leadership, institutional reforms and resilience within Nigeria’s security architecture.
Reaffirming its commitment to advancing security sector development, the Institute said it would continue working under the patronage of General Buratai to promote transformational leadership and strengthen national resilience in the face of evolving security challenges.
