Nathaniel Bassey Questions African Teams’ Mentality After Argentina’s Comeback Win Over Egypt

Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has raised questions about what he called a pattern in African football teams after Argentina’s 3-2 comeback win over Egypt yesterday.

In an X post, Bassey said he was not downplaying Argentina’s performance and noted that he is a fan of Lionel Messi. He, however, voiced concern over African sides’ repeated failure to hold on to leads.

“Taking nothing away from Argentina, and of course also being a Messi Stan, I’d still like to ask, what is it about African teams and not being able to finish well even after a strong start? And more so when almost crossing the finish line?” he wrote.

Bassey wondered if the issue came down to the quality and experience of the opposition. He said he believed the bigger problem is mental.

“Personally, I think it’s a mentality issue. There’s just something about the way they think, especially toward the end of these games, that switches them off,” he added.
