Oyo Teachers Begin Strike Over Abduction
Nigeria Union of Teachers has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services from Monday, June 1.
The union stated that the action was in response to repeated abductions of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.
It was gathered that on May 15, 2026, gunmen attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A Primary School in Esiele, all within Oriire LGA.
Reports further indicated that 39 students and seven teachers were kidnapped during the raids.

The NUT noted that Mrs. Rachael Alamu, principal of Community High School, Esinele, was among those abducted, while two teachers has been confirmed killed by the abductees.
NUT President Audu Amba confirmed the directive in a chat with The PUNCH on today, stating that the union has directed all teachers in Oyo State to remain at home starting from Monday (tomorrow).
The NUT added that the strike formed part of a nationwide response by the union, noting that solidarity rallies has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2026, across all state capitals to press for urgent government intervention and the safe release of abducted school personnel and learners.
The union therefore opined that the rallies is aimed at demanding secure learning environments across Nigeria, while also describing the situation of abducted teachers and students as horrifying, inhumane and nightmarish conditions.
