What should have been a week dedicated solely to a high-stakes El Clasico versus Barcelona has instead been dominated by allegations of discord and turmoil within Real Madrid’s dressing room.
If Real loses against Barcelona on Sunday, its fiercest rivals will win the La Liga title for the second time in a row.
However, whereas Barcelona, which was in trouble not long ago, continues to grow, Real Madrid is in disarray due to fan dissatisfaction, managerial uncertainty, and even reports of player fighting.
BBC Sport investigates the events of the previous week and why they have sparked new concerns about a season that has unraveled both on and off the field.

Altercations, a petition, and disciplinary concerns
Spanish media reported on Wednesday that midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni had a furious verbal disagreement during training.
Valverde later verified it, and the issue is believed to have worsened on Thursday at Real’s training facility.
According to BBC Sport, the disagreement continued after training and resulted in Valverde being rushed to hospital with a head injury following a dressing room altercation.
Valverde later denied that the two had physically battled, stating that the injury occurred when he “accidentally hit a table” during the confrontation.
In a lengthy statement made on Thursday evening, the Uruguay midfielder stated that he sustained “a small cut on my forehead that required a routine visit to the hospital” and denied that either player had struck the other.
An emergency meeting was later held, which included club president Florentino Perez, coaching staff members, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, and captain Dani Carvajal.
Real Madrid then made two statements.
The club acknowledged that disciplinary actions against both players had been initiated, and that updates will be provided “once the corresponding internal procedures have been completed”.
Valverde will miss Sunday’s El Clasico due to a concussion that would require 10-14 days of recovery.
“Clearly, someone here is spreading rumors, and with a season without a title and Real Madrid under constant scrutiny, everything gets blown out of proportion,” Valverde remarked.
On Friday, Real announced that the pair had “apologized to each other, the club, and their team-mates” and had been fined 500,000 euros (£432,037.50) each.
Dressing room splits
This week, defender Alvaro Carreras responded to reports linking him to a different disagreement with teammate Antonio Rudiger.
Carreras did not name the player, but stated on Instagram: “In recent days, certain insinuations and comments about me have emerged that do not correspond to reality.
“Regarding the event with a colleague, it is a non-issue that has already been resolved. “My relationship with the entire team is excellent.”
‘Mbappe Out’ Petition
Reports of friction amongst specific players have followed broader allegations of turmoil in the locker room.
There has been a renewed spotlight on superstar forward Kylian Mbappe.
The France striker has 85 goals in 100 appearances since joining Real Madrid, but he sparked controversy when he traveled to Sardinia to recover from a hamstring injury sustained against Real Betis.
While the vacation was permitted by the club, photos of the forward on a yacht leaked online while Real Madrid was playing Espanyol, generating criticism from fans already dissatisfied with the team’s performances.
An online petition titled ‘Mbappe out’ quickly gained traction on social media, and now has more than 46 million signatures.
Alvaro Arbeloa said a decision on the forward’s availability for Sunday’s match would be made later this week.
Managerial uncertainty
These concerns, combined with the team’s relatively poor performances, have focused attention on head coach Alvaro Arbeloa and his apparent inability to maintain control of the dressing room during this turbulent period.
In January, the former Real Madrid defender took over from Xabi Alonso, who had only been in the position for six months.
His lack of senior managerial experience sparked debate from the moment he was appointed, with questions raised about his ability to manage established stars such as Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.
This week’s events have validated those concerns for many supporters.
With only four matches remaining in the season, Arbeloa’s immediate task will be to restore stability, refocus the group, and prevent further degradation in performance and discipline.
While silverware is no longer a realistic goal, there is still a need to conclude the campaign with a sense of control.
Beyond the short term, though, the emphasis is already turning to the larger organization above him.
There is now pressure on club president Florentino Perez, who must make a decisive choice following a series of managerial changes that have failed to provide continuous success.
