My Schoolmates Called Me Wizkid Because Of My Voice – Fola
Fast-rising Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Afolarin Odunlami, popularly known as Fola, has revealed that his schoolmates used to compare his voice to that of Wizkid while he was in secondary school.
The singer disclosed this during a recent interview on the ‘I Said What I Said’ podcast, where he spoke about his early passion for music.
Fola said he was in Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) when he broke his arm, adding that he was already into music at the time and had a band.

He said his band members nicknamed him Wizkid because of his naturally high-pitched voice.
“I had a former band in school then that we did songs together. Those girls were calling me Wizkid then; I had a tiny voice. If I play you the first song I recorded in the studio, you will think say na Wizkid,” he said.
Fola has continued to make a name for himself in the highly competitive music industry. He rose to prominence after signing with Bella Shmurda’s record label, Dangbani Republik, in October 2024.
With songs such as ‘Alone’, ‘Feeling’, ‘Mandela’ and the hit collaboration ‘Who Does That’ with Bella Shmurda, the singer has continued to expand his discography and growing influence.
He released ‘Catharsis’, his debut studio album, in 2025.
Last year, the artiste also recounted his first day in Lagos in 2018, which ended with him spending a night in a police cell.
He said the experience made him question his life choices at the time, but it eventually became part of his inspiring rise in the music industry.
