Ayo Animashaun Slams Artistes Chasing Grammys But Snubbing The Headies

The founder of The Headies, Ayo Animashaun, has criticised Nigerian artistes who submit their works for Grammy consideration while allegedly ignoring the local award scheme.

The reaction comes after several Nigerian stars, including Davido, Asake, and Adekunle Gold, announced they had submitted their projects for consideration at the upcoming Grammys.

In a post shared on Instagram, Animashaun questioned why artistes who eagerly chase foreign awards that “don’t even care about them” fail to submit entries for The Headies, yet complain when they are not nominated.

He wrote that, “Tom, Dick and Harry will submit entries to foreign award bodies that don’t even care about them and proudly post about it. But these same people won’t submit their entries to the Headies, yet they’ll complain about not being nominated. Funny.”

Animashaun said the organisers remain confident in their decisions, including the plan to move the awards abroad, as long as artistes understand the vision and sponsors share in their long-term goals.

While admitting that criticism is unavoidable, he noted that some of their decisions will only be appreciated with time.

“As long as those who benefit from what we do understand and appreciate it, the artistes understand why taking The Headies to the moon sometimes is the right move, and our sponsors see the vision, we can stand firmly by our decisions,” he added.

“Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not every opinion carries equal weight. Posterity will be kind to those who see possibilities before they become obvious.”

Meanwhile the 18th edition of The Headies, which was initially billed to hold in Toronto, Canada on October 23, 2026, has now been postponed to April 10 and 11, 2027.
