AY Reveals Asake’s 2019 DM Asking Support
Prominent Nigerian comedian and actor AY Makun has said he dug up an old Instagram message from Asake, long before the singer blew up globally.
He shared the story after attending Asake’s sold-out “In God We Trust” concert at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Looking back at the singer’s growth, AY said Asake slid into his DMs in 2019 to ask for help with his music, as he admitted that he never saw it at the time.
“I remember when this boy messaged me on Instagram,” AY said. “I didn’t see it on time. This was around 2019.”
In the video he posted, Asake introduced himself as “Ololade” and asked AY to listen to his track.
“Good Evening sir. I’m OLOLADE. How are you doing sir? I’m here for help, KING AY. I just drop a record titled – African Something. You vibing to the song is a lot to my career,” he wrote.
“KING AY, Help a son sir. May God bless you and your family. I love you KING AY,” the message reads.
AY stressed he was not bringing up the DM to claim any part of Asake’s success, but to credit the singer’s rise to God, talent, and hard work.
“I’m not saying all of this to take any credit. That glory belongs to God and his talent and of course the hard work that is put into all of this,” he said.
Watching Asake perform to a packed Houston crowd reminded AY how far the singer has come from sending DMs to selling out arenas.
AY turned the moment into a lesson about treating people well.
He said today’s unknown could be tomorrow’s global star, so kindness matters.
“The truth is that the person asking to be seen today may become the person the whole world will celebrate tomorrow. So be good to people, respect their dreams, never look down on anyone because you simply cannot tell what tomorrow brings,” AY said.
After the show, AY was taken backstage by Asake’s team and the singer personally came to greet him.
The comedian praised Asake’s humility and performance, noting that fame has not changed him.
“Ah Asake, you were simply phenomenal,” AY said.
“Nigeria celebrates you, Africa celebrates you and the world is seeing all your doings and workings right now,” he added.
